CUP CANDIDATES FOR SATURDAY PROVIDE ATTRACTIVE GALLOPS

Though none of the visiting contingent has yet put in an appearance, interest was taken in the semi-final gallops of local horses yesterday in preparation for the opening of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday. Gay Gordon was responsible for an attractive six furlongs without being unduly extended, and as a result his time for the distance was not quite as fast as that registered by Red Ruler, the latter having three companions in his gallop. The course proper was available for fast work, and the goirt£ was really good, the track having been copiously watered for the past two months. The pegs were about 27ft out. Gay Gordon furlongs in 1.18, being brought home over the last three in 39 by Aberdeen. The Coronach gelding appears improved by his racing at Trentham, where he followed up a third placing in the Anniversary Handicap with a win in the mile January Handicap on the middle day. Though the ten furlongs of the Marton C:p is the longest journey that Gay Gordon has successfully essayed, tn ere nr< j indications that Mrs J. G. Alexanders representative will be one of the fancied coniestanis ia the Wanganui Cup Aberdeen has gone o i the right way since he atoned for h.’s first-day defeat by winning the Kaitoke Handicap at Trentham on Saiurday, and he will probably be the public choice in the second “leg” o' the double at Wanganui.

Yasda (K. Chote) made all the pace over a circuit in company with Hostess (N. McKinnon). Clocked home from the six, they registered 1.18 1-5, with Hostess making up some of her leeway. Yasda has run some solid races since winning the Aldworth Stakes at Marton, and at 7.5 he will j have to be considered in the Wanga- i nui Cup, in which Hostess will alscu represent the stable. Parlous (N. McKinnon) finished k i shade in front ot Paddy Jo*i (K Chote) in a spin over half a mile to I register 49 4-ssec. Paddy Joe madt I the early pace but Parlous caught him | over the final stages. The pair were | accompanied by Baccarat (light boy;, I who was not much use to them and ! was beaten off at the finish. The Pro and Brown Jester were associated in a fairly easy gallop over four furlongs, taking 53 2-ssec, with The Pro having the better of it at the finish. The Pro is engaged in the Victory Hack Handicap, and as he is ex* pected to have improved with his recent racing, in which he has not had much luck, he must be given a good chance on Saturday’. Vigorous, an attracitve all-the-way winner in the Siberia Hack Handicap al the Ashhurst meeting, was let off with a light task, but the Lord Bobs gelding looks in good order for his early engagements. Miss Majesty, an acceptor for the Kai Iwi Maiden Race, moved a bit short because of a ricked shoulder, V-d hopes are held that she will be able to fulfil her engagement. Red Ruler (R. Burt), Already (K. Chote), Hazy (E. Lett) and Makotuku (P. Carroll) were companions over six furlongs, with Already leading most of the way and Red Ruler making up ground in the straight to finish a neck in front. Hazy was a length back, with Makotuku close up. As Red Ruler was timed to run the six furlongs in 1.17 1-5, it was a very satisfactory gallop for a Cup lightweight. Marching Girl finished ahead of Condine and Denaby at. the enn of a spin over three furiongs in 39. After his three strenuous races at Trentham, where he was placed fourth on each of the earlier days - and

won the City Handicap last. Saturday, The Pagan did steady pacework. He looks well and is to run in the Jackson Stakes, in which he- will be ridden by W. L. Aitken.
