TAIHAPE CRICKET NOTES Hawke Cup Match A “LINE” ON THE R ANGITIKEI PLAYERS. (By “Square-Leg") For the first time in history a Hawke Cup match has been allotted to Taihape and a three day fixture between Rangitikei and Wairarapa will commence on Monday, December 26 (Boxing Day) at 10.30 a.m. Each day there will be a commentary on play over the loud speaker system. Cliff Merrett (Mangaweka) will be commentator on Monday while Allen Smith (Marton) will take over these duties on Tuesday and Wednesday. Mr. Tom Shepherd will be manager of the Rangitikei team. Miss Burgess (Mangaweka) will act as scorer. Play will start at 10.30 a.m. each day and continue until 6.30 p.m. with luncheon and afternoon tea adjournments.

The following biographical notes on the Rangitikei players should prove of interest to followers of the game:—A. B. Marshall (Porewa) has played for Rangitikei for many seasons and has been their opening batsman in recent years. He is a sound stroke player. Marshall is one of several sons of G. L. Marshall, all of whom have represented Rangitikei The other opening batsman is A. R. Hamilton (Taihape) who is a former Wellington representative player. He has been in good form with the bat this year, scoring a century in a recent club fixture. D. McCarthy (Country, Taihape), has represented Rangitikei for the past three seasons and performed well in the recent Country trial match. He followed this up with a brilliant century in the North v South Rangitikei game. He is noted for his graceful style. He also has some good bowling performances for Rangitikei to his credit but has not figured a great deal as a bowler in club competitions this season. H. Schroeder (Country) will be playing his first game for Rangitikei having previously been a Central King Country rep. He is a sound left hand bat and a useful medium paced change bowler. S. Finney (Hunterville) captain of the Rangitikei team, with his left-arm spinners, has been the mainstay of the Rangitikei bowling for the past four seasons. He is also a competent batsman, and if he can overcome his tendency towards impatience, can be looked to for runs in this match. N. Ashenden (Taihape Club) first represented Rangitikei in the 1945-46 season and established himself as the best all rounder at that season. He headed the Rangitikei bowling averages last year and opened this year s competition cricket with a century. B. Monk (Marton Suburbs), first represented Rangitikei two seasons ago displaying his all round ability by heading both batting and bowling averages. He has been in good form with the bat in recent competition games. , . H. Crichton (Navy) is playing his first games for Rangitikei and has showed himself in Taihape cricket this season to be an attacking batsman as well as a useful medium paced bowler. V Simcox (Old Boys, Marton) has played for Rangitikei during the past two seasons and is a forceful bat who has been scoring well in recent games. T. Whittle (Country) is a fast medium bowler who has taken a good number of wickets for Rangitikei over a lengthy period of representative cricket. He is a very sure fieldsman and has no superior in the district, in the cover-point position. H. Towers (Hunterville) first represented Rangitikei many years ago and with his slow medium right-hand deliveries has achieved considerable success with the ball this season. WANGANUI COLTS V NORTH RANGITIKEI. This game will be played at Ngaurukehu on Mr. R. S. Treadwell’s property on Wednesday and Thursday, December 28 and 29. Mr. R. S. Treadwell has been appointed manager of the North Rangitikei team. The North Rangitikei players are to assemble at the Taihape Post Office at 10.45 a.m., where they will await the arrival of the Wanganui team which is travelling by bus from Palmerston North. PERSONAL. Mr. E. R. Barrington, secretary-or-ganiser for the N.Z. National Party in the Waimarino electorate, was tendered a complimentary supper by the proprietor of the Terraces Hotel, Taupo, recently. The opportunity was also taken by the Taupo branch of the National Party to present Mr. Barrington with a cheque as a mark of esteem and appreciation of his efforts during the recent election campaign. Mr. Barrington feelingly responded. Visitors to Taihape on Wednesday were Mr. and Mrs. J. Loughnane, former early resident of this town. Miss E. H. McCombie, daughter of Mr. W. McCombie, of Winiata, will be returning to New Zealand shortly from an overseas tour which included a visit to Great Britain and the continent. Mr. Guy Nicholls assumed the duties of manager of the Gretna Hotel, Taihape, this week, during the absence on holiday of the licensee, Mrs. M. Quirk. He is a brother of Mr. Mark Nicholls, former All Black footballer. CHRISTMAS PARTY AT OTAIHAPE CLUB. A Christmas party was held at the Otaihape Club on Wednesday evening. There was a large attendance of members. An elaborate supper was provided, the Christmas cake being supplied by Mrs. S. Goddard, who was accorded an ovation. The compliments of the season were extended to members by the president, Mr. T. V. Auld, who also took the opportunity of thanking Mr. and Mrs. Goddard for providing the supper. He said that they were going away shortly on holiday and wished them “all the best.” CAR HITS BANK. A seven-seater motor-car driven by I a visitor to Taihape, collided with a bank on the main north road near Jensen's woolshed this week and then rebounded to the other side of the road. The vehicle subsequently hit and damaged another car. Fortunately, nobody was hurt. The rear door of the car eventually flew open and luggage toppled out on to the road.
