Have Maoris Right Under Treaty To Shoot Swans Out Of Season?
WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA)— The problem of Maoris shooting ducks and swans out of season on Horowhenua Lake, west of Levin, is causing serious concern at Otaki. Rangers are not sure if the Maoris have some right under the Treaty of Waitangi to shoot out of season. This was stated by an Otaki member of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, Mr F. Thorpe, at last night s meeting of the board. “Horowhenua Lake is really a domain, and we think the Maoris are poaching,” said Mr Thorpe. “However, Maori headmen and members of the pakeha community are not sure.” A Wellington officer of the society, Mr A. D. Head, said he was sure that as the lake was part of a domain the Maoris were poaching. It was a matter for the borough council to take up. Mr Thorpe said later that canoe loads of Maoris had been seen shooting on the lake out of season. ‘‘They shoot at the swans with a .22 calibre rifle, wound the bird, and then chase it in a canoe until they overtake it,” he said.
