LAMBING PERCENTAGE RECORD FOR DOMINION
96.48 Against 93.11 In 1947 WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA)— The estimated lambing percentage for 1949 is 96.48, a record figure for the Dominion, which exceeds by more than 3 per cent the previous highest figure of 93.11 in 1947, said the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Holyoake, in a statement tonight. “This high percentage, in conjunction with the record number of breeding ewes, indicates that the actual number of lambs is probably close on 21,000,000,” continued the Minister. “With the very favourable spring which has been experienced the ultimate tonnage of meat should be a record,” he added. • In a table included in the Minister’s statement the estimated number of breeding ewes in the North Island in ;1949 was given as 12.033,080 (11,821,596 last vear) and the number in the South Island 9,472.289 (9,233,886), giving a Dominion total of 21,505,369 •(21,055,482). : The estimated percentage of lambs for 1949 in the North Island is given ‘as 94.55 (87.43) and in the South Island 98.93 (96.93), with a Dominion ■percentage of 96.48 (92.72). i The estimated number of lambs ir the North Island in 1949 is 11,377,07.’ (10,572.444) and in the South Islam 9,370,665 (8,950.202), with a Dominion total of 20,747,741 (19,522,646). I The actual number of lambs tailed last year in the North Island wa 1 10.830,868 and in the South Islam 8,975.017. the Dominion total bein 19,805,885.
