MR. McKELL MAY BE RECALLED

SYDNEY, Dec. 12.—The new Lib-eral-Country Party Government may ask the King to recall Governor-Gen-eral W. J. McKell.

Deputy-Leader of the former Opposition (Mr. E. J. Harrison) was so bitter about Mr. McKell’s appointment that he said he would refuse to go to Government House. He has kept his promise.

The term for a Governor-General is usually five years, but no term is fixed, and the King will recall his representative on the advice of the Prime Minister.

Others appointed by the Chifley Government who are likely to lose their posts because the Opposition objected to them strongly, include the Ambassador to the U.S.A. (Mr. Norman Makin), former Labour Minister for the Navy, and the High Commissioner to Canada (Mr. F. M. Forde). Trans-Australian Airways chairman (Mr. A. W. Coles) who as an Independent. defeated the Fadden Government in 1941 by voting with Labour, may lose his position. Mr. McKell, an Australian, was appointed Governor-General of Australia by the Chifley Government in 1947. He was born at Pambula, NewSouth Wales, on September 26, 1891, and was a boiler maker by trade until he became a barrister in 1925. In 1945 he was appointed a King's Counsel. Elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly at the age of 25, he served in several Ministerial capacities until in 1941 he became Premier, holding that position until he was appointed Governor-General.
