WAR MEMORIAL SUBSIDY

At Tuesday’s meeting of the Taihape Borough Council a letter was Received from the Under-Secretary to the Department of Internal Affairs, advising that a £1 for £1 subsidy had been granted on Taihape’s War Memorial Park scheme. “It is good news at last, and I’m sure that we gained our point by sheer persistency on the part of those who were active in the matter, including the deiputy-Mayor, Cr. A Gregory said that it was imperative that Taihape “get busy - ’ regarding an extension of the abattoir district. The motion was carried. WINDOWS BROKEN AT CAMP SITE. It was decided, at the monthly meeting of the Taihape Borough Council on Tuesday evening, to erect wire netting over the windows at the camp site in an effort to prevent further breakages. It was explained that three windows had been broken recently, including one that had been repaired a short time ago. GRANT TO FILM SOCIETY. A grant of £lO to the Film Society was made at Tuesday’s meeting of the Taihape Borough Council, on the motion of Cr. N. Ashenden. PATH TO MEMORIAL PARK A suggestion that the path which would lead to the Memorial Park in the main south road should go through the reserve rather than follow the road, was made by Cr. A. Gregory at Tuesday’s meeting of the Taihape Borough Council. VEHICULAR CROSSINGS. The matter of vehicular crossings was raised at Tuesday’s meeting of the Taihape Borough Council and it was decided, on the motion of Cr. A. M. Gordon, seconded by Cr. N. Ashenden, that the borough foreman, town clerk, and chairman of the Works Committee consult with the engineer, Mr. C. A. Gillett, concerning the matter. Cr. Ashenden brought up the matter of whether the channelling should be next to the fences or the footpath. Cr. Ashenden moved that Mr. Gillett be invited to attend a meeting of the council next Tuesday to discuss his report on proposed street improvements. The motion was carried. UTIKU HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY SCHOOL. At the break-up ceremony of Utiku Holy Trinity Sunday School on Monday evening the opportunity was taken to make presentations to Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Gibbs, as a mark of appreciation of their work during the past year. Mr. Gibbs, who kept the church grounds in order, was presented with a gold pen, while Mrs. Gibbs, who looked after the interior of the church and attended to the flowers, was the recipient of a crystal sugar basin and another gift. The presentations were made on behalf of the parishioners. Mr. and Mrs. Gibbs feelingly responded. A presentation was also made to Mrs. W. Gardiner (nee Miss Irene Bevett) who was married recently. She was a teacher at the Sunday School. Another teacher at the Sunday School, Miss Verma Marchioni, who left in November to take up nursing, was also the recipient of a tangible token of esteem. The presentations were made by the vicar, Rev. J. R. Neild. Mrs. Hebberd, superintendent of the Sunday School, for the past 21 years was presented with a toast rack and crystal dish by Connie Wilson. The function took the form of a “tea,’’ pride of place being occupied by a large cake containing 21 candles, in honour of the superintendent of the Sunday School, Mrs. Hebberd, who has just completed 21 years’ service. The vicar referred to the excellent work of Mrs. Hebberd, and thanked her for all she had done. He expressed thanks to the other teachers for their spjbndid work during the past 12 months and added that he wished to thank all others who had taken an interest in the welfare of the Sunday School. Junior girls: Arine Meredith, Pauline Jones, Peggy Palmer, Lorraine Ross, Janette Thurston, Lynette Wilson, Dawn O’Brien, Shirley Ross. Junior boys: Graeme Marchioni, Bruce Jones, Brian Marchioni, Brian Anderson, lan Meredith, Maurice Davies, Alan Davies.
