met since the early days of guerilla war in 1945. TRADE UNIONS Trade unions in Indonesia play no significant role on the contemporary political scene, except as “fronts” for left-wing groups. They claim 300,000 membership, but Indonesian government circles assert that the unions produce no evidence to support their claim. The Indonesian trade union congress met recently in Jogjakarta for the first time since the abortive Communist revolt at Madiun in 1948.
