Three In 30 Children To Spend Some Time In Mental Hospital
WASHINGTON, Dec. 12 (Recd. 6 pm).—Three of every 30 average American schoolchildren were destined to spend part of their lives in a mental hospital, a high Government official declared today. Mr John Thurston, acting Federal Security Administrator, made the statement before a Congressional committee studying problems of low income families. He said the plight of these people presented a national dilemma. They could be helped by the adoption of President Truman? medical insurance, child welfare and other social service programmes. Mr Thurston said 2,000,000 boys and girls from 6 to 17 did not attend school. Millions of others were receiving only a sub-standard education.
