WAITOTARA COUNTY CHANGES CHAIRMAN; MR. W. McKEE ELECTED
Mr. W. McKee was elected chairman at yesterday’s meeting of the Waitotara County Council and Cr. G. Palmer was elected deputy-chairman. Cr. McKee, who was defeated by Cr. Palmer last year after serving a term in the chair, was nominated in opposition to Cr. Palmer by Crs A. R. Efilinghurst and W. K. Ross and Cr. Palmer by Mrs W. G. Handley and R. Hughes. The following committees were elected:— Works: Crs. W. G. Handley (Waitotara riding), A. A. Winwood (Bruns-wick-Westmere), G. W. Crafar (Tokomaru) and F. W. Gould (Mosston). Finance: Crs. W. McKee, G. Palmer and F. W. Gould.
Series of Graft* Fires. Warm, dry weather yesterday resulted in the Wanganui Fire Brigade having a busy time with grass fires, five calls being received. The first, at 11.28 a.m., was to the old Catholic cemetery, and at 12.25 p.m. a call was received to a grass fire beside the A. Castlecliff railway line, near the Imlay Works. Three further grass fires broke out. in quick succession beside the railway track between the city and Aramoho, calls being received at 3.14, 3.19 and 3.27 p.m.
