Flag Half-Mast The flag at the Wanganui Central Fire Station was flown at half-mast yesterday out of respect for the late Mr William Seconl, who was killed in an accident on Saturday afternoon. He was a member of the brigade's auxiliary staff. Chapel for St. George’s School As the school is a church school it would be to the advantage to have a chapel, stated the headmaster, Mr. E. D. Tyndale-Biscoe, at the annual prize-giving ceremony of the St. George’s Preparatory School yesterday. An appal for funds will be made by the Board of Trustees. The school will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 1952, and it would be fitting for the school to have its own chapel by that date, said Mr. Tyndale-Biscoe. Christmas Party Wanganui crippled children Will be entertained at a Christmas party to be given by the Wanganui Rotary Club at the New Zealand Friends’ School, St. John's Hill, next Saturday. A new site for the Wanganui Gun Club has been selected adjacent to the Wanganui River at Castlecliff, and the Club has agreed to pay an annual rental of £5, plus city rates, as suggested by the Wanganui Harbour Board. Advice of the acceptance of the rental was received at yesterday’s meeting of the hoard.

Athletic Club Appeal More than £460 has been subscribed to the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s appeal for funds for the owners of the cycles lost in the recent fire. Help Appreciated. Appreciation of the help received from the board in organising the Christmas yachting regatta was received in a letter from the Wanganui Sailing Club at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board. Without the help of the board, the club could not have successfully organised the event, stated the letter. The following six pupils of the Wanganui Girls' College who sat Junior Public Service in November have been notified of their success: C. McCallum (pass with credit). P. Kempton, N. Sutcliffe, B. Increased Wharfage. A decision to increase the wharfage on wool handled at Castlecliff from 6d to 9d a bale to bring it into line with the Town Wharf charge was made at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board. The board also de,cided to increase the wharfage on coal by Is 3d a ton. This will not apply to coal imported for the Government. “I don’t like commenting on the affairs of other boards —we have just had some comment from New Plymouth that is most unfair —but if you saw the charges that some boards make it would make youi l hair stand on end,” said the chairman (Mr. E. Many fine tributes haveS been paid to the team spirit and the sportsmanship of the New Zealand cricket team which recently toured England. At the weekly meeting of the Wanganui Rotary Club yesterday Mr F. W. Gilligan related a happening which fully showed the "esprit de corps” among members of the team. In one match Sutcliffe and Scott were batting. Sutcliffe, who had been having a bad run, finally scored his first century of the tour He was still batting when Scott was dismissed for 99, On returning to the pavilion he was met by Mr Gilligan, who said: “Hard luck, Scotty." Scott replied thus: “What does it matter? Bert’s got his century.”

Visit to City A party of 22 shool children from two King Country school, Kaitieke and Whakahoro, arrived in Wanganui yesterday for a three-day visit to the city. Their visit has been arranged by the Wanganui Junior Chamber of Commerce. Members of the chamber are billetting the visitors. Today the children will visit the Durie Hill elevator, Castlecliff wharf and beach, and the Central Fire Station. Tomorrow's programme includes a visit to the Sarjeant Gallery and the Alexander Museum, with a trip to a cinema in the afternoon. On Thursday the party will see the woollen mills and the Llamba mill. Virginia Lake, and the Christ Church pipe-organ. The children will return home on Firday.
