VICE-CHANCELLOR WON TE AWAMUTU CUP IN IMPRESSIVE MANNER

AUCKLAND, Last Night (Special). —Vice-Chancellor, an Auckland Cup candidate, registered a line performance to win the Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday. He did not enjoy a good run, but h$ revealed smart sprinting ability over the final three furlongs. Made favourite, he got away nicely from the rails position and was handy going out of the straight, only to drop back into 11th place running to the five furlongs. At this stage Sir Sydney, Lady’s Bridge and Hunting Rua were abreast out in front of a punched field, the last-named being the first to cry enough with just under half a mile to go. It was just here, too that ViceChancellor was able to leave the ra ... and make a forward move on the outside. He was five horses out approaching the home turn, where he loomed up close to Sir Sydney, Lady’s Bridge and Broadway. The lastnamed then shot, to the front but was challenged by the favourite. Though Broadway carried him out in the final bit Vice-Chancellor obtained a head decision

Rosslare was a good third and never looked like being any closer, even it she did have the inside running to the post with the other pair worrying each other out across the track. Equator went another fine race for fourth, and Fifth Note was next, ahead of Napredak, Wonder Boy and Sylis. Most of these horses did not have a good run, but with the exception of Sylis they were just as well placed throughout as was the favourite. Vice-Chancellor won like a good horse. He looked a bit tender after this race on a hard and fast track.

Gold Script seemed to obtain an advantage at the start of the Flying Handicap and he was never leaded, bowling along evenly at the head ol the field right to the post. Dixie challenged him so well at the foot ot the straight that Mudford had to give the odds-on favourite a reminder, but after that there was nothing to it. Princessita ran on for a moderate third, clear of High Glory and Princess Fair. The latter revealed a lot of pace early, and High Glory came from well back. Bustany never got near the front and Regality did not seem to be able to handle the course.
