MAORI WOMAN GIVEN PROBATION FOR THEFT
“This will be your last, opportunity,” commented Mr S. S. Preston, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, yesterday, when admitting a Maori woman, Agnes Roache, to probation for 12 months. She hnd admitted stealing 2s and a pocket handkerchief, of a total value of 3s, the property of Jack Manura Cooper.
Senior-Sergeant F. Culloty, who prosecuted, told the court that at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday complainant saw accused leaving his home by the front gate. She spoke to him and rode away on a cycle. Subsequently he found that the drawers of a duchess had been disturbed and that 2s was missing. The police were notified and Constable A. A. Crowley started making inquiries. Accused heard about them and called at lhe Police Station, admitting the theit. She had been before the court previously, her last appearance being in 1946. “This woman is fond of liquor,” the Senior-Sergeant added. He suggested that she take out a prohibition order. She had been living apart from her husband, but he was prepared to have her back.
In reply to the magistrate, accused said that she would remain with her husband. Accused was admitted to probation for 12 months, special conditions being that she lake out. a prohibition order, abstain from intoxicating liquor and remain with her husband.
