Trentbam Horses For Otaki Meeting

WELLINGTON, Last night.—The three-year-old Abbotsford worked in in dashing style over a mile at Trentham yesterday morning and he must be considered a lightweight prospect for the chief event, the Raukawa Handicap, at the Otaki meeting on Saturday. Other Otaki candidates to distinguish themselves in their final trials were Earl King, Bonnie Charlie, Fighting Fox, and Wild Note. The trial grass was open for galloping. The going was a trifle greasy after overnight rain. Veine d’Or (Lockyer) was hard held to stay with Melite (Spratt) and Claudia (McDonald) over six furlongs, the last four taking 57 3-ssec. Veine d Or has trained on well since winning at Feilding and should figure prominently in the sprint at Otaki. Fighting Fox (McDonald) was travelling easily alongside Rannoch (Lockyer) throughout half a mile in 53sec. The former appears to have his chance in the highweight event at Otaki on Saturday. Alumnus (Biggs) was more impressive than Sea Shanty (Sandford) over six furlongs in 1.24 the last four requiring 56 l-ssec. Wild Note (Spratt) and Deep Sea .McDonald) were associated over half a mile in 52sec, the last three furlongs in 37 2-ssec. They finished on terms, but Wild Note appeared to have plenty in reserve. Merry Song (Taylor) showed Improvement by beating Urenui’s Gift (Page) by a length over half a mile in 54 3-ssec. The southerners Lady Guillotine (Anderson) and Robin Dayes (Hawthorne) covered uve iuivou 1.8 2-5, with the former appearing to be doing the better at the finish.

Earl King (Carlin) took the sprint honours for the morning when he galloped a smart half-mile in 50 3-ssec. The Balloch three-year-old would only require to repeat his track form to be hard to beat in the novice event at Otaki. Galway Bay (S. Bryce) ran the last half-mile of her work in 55 l-ssec. She is bearing a bright appearance after her Sydney campaign and should have prospects during the holidays.

Abbotsford (Nuttall) worked with rare dash over a mile in 1.48, the last seven furlongs in 1.33 2-5. Double Bid (Holmes) brought him home over the last half-mile in 54 2-ssec, but was of little use to his companion at the finish. Abbotsford’s work during the past couple of weeks has been impressive and the son of Cuddle may be on the verge of fulfilling the promise he showed last season.

Prefect (Anderson) was doing much better than Foxmorn (Nuttall) over the concluding stages of seven furlongs in 1.35. Prefect was a winner at Dunedin in October and looks a likely prospect for the middle distance hack event at Otaki. Super Duke (Walker) was not troubled to get to the end of half a mile in 54 l-ssec, the last three furlongs being run in 39 l-ssec. He looks well and will not be jyithout friends at Otaki, where he will be ridden by W. J. Broughton. Omega (Nuttall) and Brenlock (Holmes) were paired over seven furlongs in 1.35, the last four taking 55 sec. The former appeared to be doing the better at the finish. Follow Suit (Rossely) conceded the two-year-old Dakar Reign (Page) a couple of lengths’ start over half a mile and at the finish was shading his companion in 52 3-ssec. Myfox (Bromby) and Claro (Nuttall) were not impressive while running six furlongs, the last four taking 58 l-ssec. On the two-year-old track, Bonnie Charlie (Frame) had no difficulty in beating Lord Robert (Walker) over half a mile in 51 3-ssec. The former has freshened up since racing at the Wellington meeting and should go close to opening his winning account in the second division of the Kuao Stakes at Otaki. Godwit (Sandford) required 57sec to run half a mile. Dark Courage (Biggs galloped half a mile the reverse way in 55sec. He is intended for the Great Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Boleigh (Sandford) was moving a trifle short while sprinting half a mile, the last three furlongs in 38 3-5 sec.
