Mr. A. H. MacPherson Addresses Packed House At Taihape
TAIHAPE, Last Night (OC).—A packed house greeted Mr. A. H. Macpherson, National Party candidate for Waimarino, when he addressed electors in the Town Hall, Taihape, tonight. The Mayor, Mr. E. Loader, presided. Mr. Macpherson was given an excellent reception, his adress being freely punctuated with applause. He said that the destiny of the country at the present time lay in the hands of four Maori Members of Parliament. Dealing with the housing shortage he said 49,000 people were without homes and if the National Party became the Government they will let the people buy their own homes. Houses would be provided in rural areas. Mr. Macpherson said that the £1 today was equal in value to 11s 8d in 1939. He strongly criticised the importation of Japanese goods into the country. “We want more British Empire goods and less Japanese,” he said amidst applause. Everything controlled by the State is money going down the Grain, he added. He mentioned the loss on the railways and other Government services. including Chateau Tongariro and Waitomo Hotel. He advocated giving back to private enterprise what private enterprise should have. At the conclusion of his address he answered several questions and said he was in favour of capital punishment for murder. On the motion of Mr. G. B. Chrystal, he was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence in himself and in the National Party.
