NEW ZEALAND LAMB FOR AMERICAN PORK

NEW YORK, Nov. 8 (Recd. B.lopm).—A plan to exchange American pork for Australian and New Zealand lamb has been submitted to the British Food Ministry, said an importer, Mr Alfred Benjamin. The proposal is that 115,000 tons of pork which is in surplus supply here and scarce in the United Kingdom be exchanged for 100,000 tons or frozen lamb bought in Australia and New Zealand by Britain. Lamb is in short supply here. Mr Benjamin, who is president of the Anglo-American Trading Corporation, said that between 50,000,000 and 75,000,000 dollars would be involved in the transaction, but Britain would not be required to pay out dollars. This cable was referred last night to officers of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. The secretary, Mr L. Vogtherr, said he knew an approach along the lines outlined had been made to the British Food Ministry, but he was not aware of the Ministry’s decision. The chairman, Mr G. H. Grigg, said New Zealand was under contract to the British Ministry and it was for them to make the request to New Zealand if they wanted anything done. So far there had been no communication between them and the New Zealand Board, and no action had been taken on the Board’s part.—(PA)
