Battle Strife, Winner Of Stratford Jubilee Handicap, Bred On Staying Lines

(By

“KESTREL”

Battle Strife, winner of the Stratford Jubilee ITalldieap last Saturday, does not figure among the entries for the New Zealand Cup, and probably his connections do not aspire to such heights as yet. On breeding, however, Battle Strife might appeal for one of the long-distance races this season, and he should make his mark in provincial handicaps.

Trained at Awapuni by E. C. Parker for J. P. Wilson, Battle Strife is a five-year-old gelding by Battle Song from Rival Shot, a Winning Hit mare who was from the Martian mare Equipment, so on both sides of his pedigree he has staying lines.

Battle Song, who sired Battle Strife and other good winners before being sold to go to Australia, was by Spion Kop <by Spearmint, son of Carbine) from Cradle Song, by Hurry On. During his turf career Battle Song won the Irish St. Leger and the Champion Stakes (14 miles), and was narrowly beaten in the Irish Derby. He has left some useful progeny in New Zealand during his snort career before big money resulted in his being sold to go to Australia, , Battle Strife is now a live-year-old. At three years he scored an easy win in a division of the Ncvice Stakes at the Manawatu Raring Club’s winter meeting, in addition to gaining places in live of his 13 starts. Last season he started in 15 races for two minor

places and a win in the Tainui Hack Handicap at the Otaki meeting in May of last year. He has made good this season, finishing third to Sly Gold and Chief Officer h: the Spring Hack Handicap at Marton in September, and following that ,ip with a win in the nine-furlong Taumanuka Hack Handicap at Otaki. In the Stratford Jubilee Handicap Battle Strife was one of the outsiders in the betting, and he drew a wide hiarble at the start. K Chote managed to get him into a handy position running out of the straight,_ and half a mile from home he was in behind the leaders. It was not till halfway lip the long straight that Battle Strife Was asked for a major effort, but just as he threw out bis challenge to Brookland he received a check. Fortunately, he was able tc regain his balance and, finishing in resolute style, he managed to get the verdict in a photo-finish for the major honours - , . Battle Strife is engaged in the Manchester Handicap at Feilding on Saturday. The weight-adjuster has lifted him 111 b for his Stratford win, but he should give a good account of himself.
