The Rangitikei County Council was viewing with alarm the increasing use of heavy crewler tiactors on county roads by farmers and contractors who had not first obtained the necessary consent from the controlling authority, said a county official yesterday. In back country areas, he said, considerable damage was being done to the road surfaces and foundations by these heavy traffic vehicles. Prosecutions, added the official, had been taken by the county for this type of offence, but more rigorous action would be taken in the future against offenders. The traffic Inspector, Mr. W. C. Shaw, said yesterday that he had been instructed to take the necessary action against those who failed to observe the regulations. Quoting from the Heavy Motor Vehicles Regulations, 1940, the inspector said it was an offence for any person to operate on any road any tractor-engine or any heavy motorvehicle which was fitted with any tire which was not of a soft or elastic material or which was fitted witli lugs, cleats or similar projections, unless consent in writing was first obtained from the controlling authority of the road.
