FISH DIARIES. Taihape seems to be perturbed at the fact that anglers are failing to hand in diaries to aid the dissemination of information. According to Mr. Hackett, P.M.G., the Government is spending more than 11 million quid on education. It is handy to know that, but it would be more interesting to see the fruits ot that, expenditure. What does education, at 11 million quid a year, do for one in the Socialist Isles? Look at the jobs offering. A city council (not ours) offers £6 12s lOd to £8 Ils 6d a week (£343 to £444 a year) for a male attendant for conveniences, and in the same issue of the paper the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research offers £372 for a B.Sc., and. £4'22 for an M.Sc. with first-class honours. Just where does education lead to in the Socialist Isles? Looks like a case of “You’ll take the high road and we’ll take the low road, and we’ll be in glory before you!’’ WE OUGHT TO BEAT THEM. England is sending a fencing team of five men and a woman to the Empire Games. That ought to rouse places like ’Kune and Raetihi, Bulls and Taihape. even Waverley. A team of five men without a woman, from any of those places ought to be able to lick England hollow—four posts to the chain,’eight wires and five battens between posts, strainers, to be footed as well as stayed! Why, Nc\V Zealand fencers are afraid of nobody, except the Aussies, and they won’t need any woman to cook meals—billy tea and bully beef’s the thing; and cook your own! Women— huh!
