DREDGE MAWHERA TO RETURN TO GREYMOUTH FOR URGENT WORK

The Greymouth Harbour Board’s bucket dredge Mawhera will leave Wanganui today for Greymouth, where its services are needed to attend to shoaling which was caused by a recent fresh in the river. The dredge completed its work at Wanganui on Saturday and since then has been preparing for its sea journey. When the dredge came to Wanganui the terms of charter provided for a period of two months at a cost of £lOO a working day. However, it was pointed out that there was a possibility that the dredge might have to be recalled for urgent work and the Ministry of Marine advised the Wanganui Harbour Board to concentrate the dredge on high priority work. This policy had already been adopted by the board. Since its brief sojourn at Castlecliff, the dredge is stated to have done good work in improving the depths of the berthages. Previously coai boats were either touching the ’/attorn or very close to it at low tide but now there is stated to be a good depth of water under their hulls at VI stages of the tide.
