County Annual Meeting. The annual meeting of the Waitotara County Council will' be held prior to the general meeting in December. Under the recent amendments to th e Counties Act, the council can now appoint a deputy-chairman. Manganuiopao Bridge. That tenders had been called for the construction of the Manganuiapao Stream bridge in the Waitotara Valley was reported by the engineer (Mr. W. I. Gardiner) at yesterday’s meeting of the Waitotara County Council. Tenders would b e called for the completion of Blueskin Corner formation. Fractured Leg. Thrown from a horse which he was riding on his farm- on Kukuta Road, yesterday, Mr. C. Crowley suffered a fractured leg. He was conveyed to the Wanganui Hospital by ambulance. His condition last night was reported as satisfactory.

Committee Discussions. Opposition to the council going into committee to discuss matters unless there was a sbstantial reason for doing so, was expressed by Cr. F. \V. Gould, at yesterday’s meeting of the Waitotara County Council. When a vote was taken on the matter, Cr. Gould voted against going into committee and explained that he did so on a matter of principle as no reason for the need to go into committee had been given.

Early Start for “Arcadians” It was decided at a meeting last night of the committee of the Wanganui Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society that “The Arcadians” would start at 7.45 p.m. each night of the remainder of the .»eason instead of 8 p.m,

Springvale Drainage. Most of the field work for the completion of a report on soil porosity in the Springvale area as a preliminary measure toward the eventual provision of a drainage scheme has been completed. The engineer (Mr. W. I. Gardiner) stated at yesterday’s meeting of the Waitotara County Council that it was not possible to make any statement as a full analysis of the information was not complete. Mowhanau Beach Clifts.

A decision to move back a portion of the fence at the top of the cliffs at Mowhanau Beach was made at yester. day s meeting of the Nukumaru Domain Board. The engineer (Mr. W. I. Gardiner) said that to prevent the falling away of the cliffs would be too expensive an item for the board to tackle and the only thing to do was to move the fence farther and farther back.

C.0.R.5.0. Appeal. Final figures for the Wanganui C.0.R.5.0. Postmen s Drive held recently total £Bl2 8s sd. This includes sundry amounts paid to the treasurer (Mr. E. Lind) since the day of the drive, for which receipts have been issued. An anonymous donation of £5 left with the secretary (Miss Eva Brown) is also acknowledged. Further donations will be received, and parcels of clothing may be left this week at the Red Cross Rooms, above McKenzie's, marked “for C.0.R.5.0.”

Show Preparations. More than 60 members and supporters of the Wanganui Agricultural and Pastoral Association were busy at the racecourse yesterday erecting stock and sheep pens, preparing horse paddocks and carrying out other work as a preliminary to the annual spring show to be held there on Friday and Saturday. Record entries have been received in some sections, and given fine weather the show should be the most successful in the association’s history. Caravan Danger.

Over the past two years, 47 accidents involving personal injury had occurred where one of the vehicles was drawing a trailer, stated the Minister of Transport (Mr. Hackett) this week. Right through the summer months, holiday makers would be setting out and many caravans would be on the road, he said. His attention had been drawn to the apparent lack of care taken by some drivers of vehicles drawing trailers.

Teaching Profession. The Education Department, has warned post - primary school boards that they have no power to waive the provision that teachers must, have served two years in one appointment before proceeding to another. In special circumstances, boards may recomment the Director of Education to dispense with this clause, but the decision rests with him. The appointment of principals and teachers for special , posts are the only ones in which /he director’s approval is not necessary. Cases of boards breaking this rule have been reported.

Supplementary Roll. The supplementary roll to be used in the Wanganui electorate for the general elections on November 30 closed on Monday and should go to the printer today. The roll will contain 820 names and should b e issued by the end of the week. This brings the total number of names on the general and supplementary roll to 15,218, but when the names of persons who are deceased or who have left the district are struck off, this number will oe reduced. The returning officer’s staff is now engaged in preparing for the elections at the end of the month.

Sheep Dogs in Action. Demonstrations of sheep dogs in action will be given by Mr. R. Fortune, of Timaru, on both days of the Wanganui Spring ShoW, according to advice received by the secretary, Mr. F. H. Donaldson. He said yesterday that Mr. Fortune had consented to give these demonstrations at 2.30 p.m. on Friday and at the sam e time on Saturday. The Wanganui Motor Boat Club will exhibit the latest type of speed boats at the show. In addition, some of the boats used by the Wanganui Sailing Club will be on display, also craft from rowing sheds in Wanganui, the purpos e being to stimulate public interest in public sports.
