T.O.B. v. Wanganui

Thomas and Christensen resumed the T. 0.8. first innings and added 69 r or the third wicket before th e latter was dismissed with the total at 79. Both had a bit of luck during their partnership. The wicket was tricky at first and risks had to be taken to score runs. No actual chances were given, but a number of uppish strokes were played. Thomas later settled down and produced some excellent off and straight drives. His innings of 68, which paved the way for his team's win, included seven 4’s. When he was caught the total was 109 for 4 wickets.

He was associated in a useful partnership of 30 with Urlich, who played a slow but valuable innings. When Urlich went in to bat the score was 79. When he was dismissed the tqtal had reached 146. Urlich and Brown gave a good exhibition of running between the wickets and unsettled the fieldsmen with a number of quick runs. Brown and Grant also ran well. Brown, who batted soundly for 22, helped Grant to add 56 for the seventh wicket. However, the innings of the day was played by Grant. He batted confidently and aggressively. His 42 included one magnificent six. When he was 29 and the total was 187—2 runs behind the Wanganui score, he was dropped in the covers. His next scoring shot, and the winning hit, was the best stroke of the game. To a good length ball from T. O. Cave, Grant, with a perfect lofted straight drive, hit the ball into a section at the rear of the pavilion. Grant also scored freely off H. B. Cave. Best Wanganui bowler was R. Head, who took 5 for 61 off 25 overs. He bowled fairly steady and moved the ball awkwardly for the batsmen. H. B. Cave bowled 23 overs, for 55 runs and one wicket. Frankly his bowling was not good in this match. It fell far short of his real ability. He was much faster, but on Saturday he was not very accurate. The Wanganui fielding was rather poor and far too many runs were given away. Wanganui commenced their second innings with two hours of play left. : When stumps were drawn they had | scored 87 for 8 wickets. The total would have probably been higher if Harry Cave had batted. However, it might have been lower if R. Brown could have remained on the ground. He had bowled three overs for one wicket and the pitch was most responsive to spin. Hunt again made a useful score for Wanganui. His innings was ’a mixture , of dour defence and free stroke-mak- | ing. Jeromsen hit a grand six to the mid-wicket boundary on the leg side I in his score of 17. From a T. 0.8. point of view their out cricket was good. The bowling was much better than the first day, particularly that of Ibbetson and Thomas, the opening pair. The fielding was alert, with the picking-up and returning to the wicket good.
