FRENCH STEAMER PUTS BACK TO PORT

SYDNEY. Nov. 6 (Recd. 6 p.m.)— A French steamer, the Neo Herbridais battled back to Sydney against heavy seas after narrowly escaping disaster.

When she reached port she was listing heavily, and her steering gear was out of commission.

After she left Sydney on Friday for Noumea heavy seas carried away part of the rudder and shifted most of the cargo to the port side. As the ship lay broadside to a gale which swept the seas right over her, the men managed to repair the steering chain and bring the vessel under partial control.
