OPENING OF WANGANUI SOFTBALL SEASON

The men’s and women’s softball competitions commenced in Wanganui on Saturday on the Gonville Domain. Teams showed good form for the opening matches and the teams won were those who had practised hard. Dodgers, in their game against M.1.A., showed superior knowledge of the rules and with the fine pitching of G. Atkinson they gave their lesser experienced opponents few opportunities. The M.I.A. players gave a good exhibition of catching ‘ any fly ball that same their way. With more experience together they will provide strong opposition to the other teams. The scores were:— Dodgers: 3 3 22 3 10—23. M.1.A.: 1 0 0 0 0 o—l. For Dodgers the teamwork between the catcher, D. Boobyer, and the pitcher, G. Atkinson, was good. Y. Edwards played a sound game for M.I.A. Amazons won by default from Athletic. In the men’s section Star defeated Wanganui East by 13 runs to 12. B. Clapperton scored three runs for Star. The winners had the upper hand until Wanganui East brought the former representative, C. Croucher, on to pitch. Details:— Star: 3 22 4 2 o—l 3. Wanganui East: 0 5 2 0 .0 2 3—12. Giants gave a grand exhibition of combined play when they overwhelmed United by 46 runs to 12. The United fieldsmen could not do a thing right and the accurate pitching of D. Terry was too much for their batters. Giants’ batters were on form and hit to all parts of the field. If the losers had shown more backing-up and teamwork in their fielding they may have kept the score down. Details: Giants: 4 5 1 14 9 4 9—46. United: 2 0 0 0 6 0 4—12.
