WANGANUI GOLF CLUB CLOSES ITS SEASON

The closing day for the Wanganui Golf Club’s winter season was held at Belmont links on Saturday with an excellent attendance of members. The competition for the day, which was played under good conditions, was a Canadian mixed foursome bogey and was won by K. Brooks and Mrs. Burke from Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Thornton, with cards of 6 up and 4 up respectively. The competition for the Kellick Plate, played in conjunction with the former, was won by Dr. and Mrs. U. G. Williams, who successfully retained the plate which they won last year. At the conclusion of the day’s play the winter season was declared closed by the president (Mr. H. G. Carver), and trophies won during the season were presented to winners by Mrs. Carver. The president, in his remarks, made reference to the excellent way the course is coming back into pre-war class, due to no small extent, to the efforts of the greenkeeper (Mr. Thornton) and his assistants. He also referred to and thanked the committee which, he stated, had done an enormous amount of work this year- and members of which had sacrificed a lot of their own time in the completion of their duties. After the presentation of trophies a long driving competition was held, the winner being J. F. Farley, who hit two beautiful balls, both of which outdistanced the rest of the field by some 12 yaids. Summer competitions will start on Saturday, November 19. Next Saturday lhe annual R.S.A. tournament is being played at Belmont. Provided an exceptionally dry summer is not experienced the course should be in good order throughout the summer, as water is laid on to all greens and at present the course is in first class condition. During the summer months it is the intention of the committee to remodel the Bth and 9th greens, where temporary greens have already been formed, and also to mill a long line of trees to the left of the* 10th fairway. At present during the winter months Ihey shade the 9th and 10th greens for a greater part of the day.
