Wanganui Jockey, K. Chote, Rides Long-Priced Winners At The Stratford Meeting

(By

" KESTREL”)

|The Wanganui lightweight, K. Choir, rode two winners at Stratford on Saturday, these being Battle Strife in the Jubilee Handicap and the Wanganui-owned Red Ruler in the Budge Memorial Hack Handicap. Both were at long prices. Red Ruler paying double figures and Battle Strife over a quarter of a century.

Backers of favourites experienced an indifferent innings, the only successful favourites being Royal Boy in a division of the Lowgarth Trial Stakes, and Paul-1 tina in the open sprint. In the latter event Faultina, on whom a 51b. apprentice allowance was claimed, carried 9.3 and easily won her fourth race in the current season. Weather conditions for the meeting were reasonably good, there being only one or two light showers in spite of the overcast outlook in the morning. The track was fast, there being r j adverse effects following the heavy rain iaic in the week. There was a good attendance and the totalisator turnover at £50,106 showed an increase of £6355 over last year s £43,751. The winner of the Stratford Jubilee Handicap, Battle Strife, is a five-year-old gelding by Battle Song from the Winning Hit mare Rival Shot. He is raced by Mr J. P. Wilson, who has been in the racing game only a short time but has won the £lOO silver teaset which formed the trophy for Saturday’s event. This vias presented after the race by Mrs N. Moss, wife of the president, after Mr Nash had extended congratulations at the ceremony at the birdcage Battle Strife is trained at Awapuni by E. C. Parker, and he carried only £lO7 10s (win) and £149 10s (place), as against £572 and £462 on Robin’s Reward, the each-way favourite. JUBILEE HANDICAP Battle Strife came with a welltimed run to win the Stratford Jubilee Handicap narrowly from Brookland, giving K. Chote his second successive win on the day and rewarding his supporters with a d.vidend of over a quarter of a century. Running out of the straight Prince Chat and Brookland had command from Square Dink, Miss Bairnsfather, Hit or Miss, Curtana, Battle Strife, Lord Pilot and Yasda. Into the back stretch Square Dink and Battle Strife followed Prince Chat and Brookland, and as they commenced to cross the top Prince Chat was clear of Brookland, Mercian Lad, Battle Strife, Square Dink, Titahi, Curtana and Yasda. Once in line for the judge Brookland wrested the lead off Prince Chat, with Battle Stiife challenging, and in the run for the line Battle Strife just got up to beat Brookland by half a head. Prince Chat was nearly three lengths back, clear of Mercian Lad, who just beat Mission for fourth place. Square Dink and Miss Bairnsfather were almost in line with the latter pair, and then came Hit or Miss and Yasda. FAULTINA AGAIN Faultina was each-way favourite, but at a generous price, for the Stewart Handicap, and the Defaulter mare continued her winning way to score easily. Bust any and Travel King carried the field along at a smart clip, with Bella Mia, Dallas and Faultina two lengths back at the hall-mile. Bustany. Travel King and Bella Mia led, Faultina, on the outside, into the straight, but the favourite then ran past them to win as she liked. Bustany just held off the fast-finishing Sly Robin for second place, a length ahead of Dallas, with Travel King, Bella Mia and Eastern Charm next. Lord Manna made a short-lived move two furlongs from home. A BLANKET 11NISH In a desperate finish P.ed Ruler just beat Royal Drake, Spoil Sport and Neutron in the Budge Memorial Hack, the winner returning a dividend running into double figures. Blossom Time, Secret Ruler, lhe Pro and Robbie Burns were the leaders running out of the straight and into the back stretch, but at the five furlongs Justice had run up to Blossom Time, and Robbie Burns, The Pro, Swing Bridge, Spoil Sport, Secret Ruler and Fearless Gain were m close attendance. Swing Bridge. moved up fast to lead into the straight from Blossom Time and Neutron, with ‘Spoil Sport and Royal Drake coming fast and Red Ruler commencing his run. Neutron and Sjoil Sport held command a furlong oif the post, but Royal Drake ran up to them and then Red Ruler came fast to snatch a narrow verdict. Spoil Sport was only a neck away, a head in front of Neutron, and Waimanu, Blossom Time and Foveran were next. NIGHT CHARM’S HURDLES The Stratford-trained Night Charm waited on the early leaders, Garry and Precious Metal, til. halfway up the straight in the Spring Hurdles and then ran past them after the last hurdle to win handily. Garry just as comfortably beat Precious Metal, who made a bad jump at the five furlongs, at which stage the each-way favourite was challenging the pacemaker, Carry. Waratangi came from several places back for fourth, ahead of Redfort. War Effort, Levant and HemoPai followed at intervals. Horouta ran off at the half-mile after being handy to the leaders. THE MINOR EVENTS Divisions were required in the Lowgarth Trial Stakes. The Te Arohatrained Finis gelding Royal Boy comfortablv won the first from Passtime, who was at the rear till three furlongs from home. Divided waited on Pat’s Joy in the second division till the straight was reached and then ■•an ahead for an easy win. Nh,ht Lady finished solidly into second ' !1 Amber Glow, who had shmvn promise at Trentham recently, fimshed fiom several places back on the turn o wti the Pembroke Trial Stakes by a gddd margin and return nearly double figures. The each-way favourtc Warspite was second, but only by n head from an outsider in Aqeho. Defence, a three-year-old colt by Pleading from Vaseones made a good impression when ne led most of the \iv in the Maiioe Hack Handicap and held off Merripay’e final challenge, th” pair were three lengths ahead of f eve? Lad. who juit noed Davilshar rut of a dividend, with Justice and Brown Jester next to finish. The Te Kuiti trainer W. I owler produced Psalm Singer in good order for the concluding event, and the
