UNDER LABOUR HIGH TAXATION HERE TO STAY. SAYS MR. GORDON

People believed that high taxation was necessary during the war years, but as far as the Government was concerned the war had never ended, said Mr. E. B. Gordon, M.P., National candidate for Rangitikei. in an election address at Fordell last night. This position would continue, he added, as long as a Socialist Government remained in power. Socialisation of coal mines, with subsequent losses, and air lines, to mention only two examples, were some reasons why the Government required more and more money from the taxpayer. Previously, airways in New Zealand were operated privately at. a profit. Last year, under nationalisation, the loss was £265,000. “All this is due to inefficiency and muddlement and explains why taxation is so high at the present time.” said Mr. Gordon. “This Government has been piling up a great debt for posterity to pay. Taxation cannot come down while this continues. We will have to work harder and produce more to enable the Government to carry on. Socialisation and State control can never succeed. Private enterprise must be successful, or you change your directorate and get the job done better.”
