AUSTRALIAN WOMEN DOMINATE FOURSOMES IN N.Z. GOLF TOURNEY

INVERCARGILL, Last Night (PA) ■ —Six hard-hitting, keen-eyed young Australians scooped the pool today by sharing honours in the New Zealand women’s golf foursoqies championship played on the Invercargill Golf Club’s links at Otatara.

The winning pair was Misses J. I. Fletcher and J. E. Percy two young Queenslanders, who led the field with a magnificent 76. Close behind them were the rest of the Australian team. The New South Wales representatives, Misses B. Cheney and P. Borthwick, were home in 78 alter suffering almost inexcusable putting lapses in the last three "holes which may have cost them the Dominion title. The third Australian pair. Miss B. Kernot (Victoria) and the youthful Miss M. Bishop, champion of West Australia, divided second place in the foursomes, also returning 78, a round which was remarkable for uniformity and its attention to bogey figures. Only at the 423-yard eight hole did they stray from par by more than one stroke. The Australians played outstanding golf, overshadowing the leading New Zealanders in stroke making, length and finesse. Miss Shand and Mrs Dolan, the Otago contenders, played the best round for New Zealand, with the former title holders, Misses Claire Smith and Zoe Hudson. Both finished the course in 80. Mrs FullertonSmith and Mrs Bail returned 81. The 1948 champions, Mrs Hollis and Miss Buchanan, crashed and tailed to return a card. A handicap played in conjunction with the foursomes was won by Misses Percy and Fletcher, with a net 73. Misses Kernot and Bishop, 74, Misses Shand and Dolan 75, Misses Smith and Hudson 76, and Misses Cheney and Borthwick 75 were next.
