BOWLING CLUBS

In presiding over the annual meeting of the Taihape Bowling Club on Thursday evening, the retiring president, Mr. D. Morris, returned thanks I for the support accorded him during his term of office and said that members had enjoyed their games at. Taihape and away. They had all had a lot of fun. He had enjoyed his term as president and wished "to thank you, one and all.’’ Referring to club competitions Mr. Morris took the opportunity of congratulating the winners on their success and added that the competitive spirit was a good thing so long at it was not "thrashed" too hard. He wished to specially congratulate Mr. A. Caulcutt on winning the three major championships of the year—a rare feat. Life Members. "The club was lucky in having loyal members over a long period of years and owed a deep debt of gratitude to them. He proposed that two of them, nafhely, Messrs A. M. Ryan and H. D. Bond, be elected life members," said Mr. Morris, who went on to explain that Mr. Ryan was a foundation member who had been a great asset to the club over a very long period of years. Mr. Bond had been a member for 34 or 35 years continuously, and had given great assistance in many ways, said the speaker, who formally proposed that Messrs Ryan and Bond be elected life members. Mr. W. T. May seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Returning thanks on behalf of Mr. Ryan and himself, Mr. Bond remarked that Mr. Ryan thoroughly deserveci the honour, but the speaker was doubtful about himself. He felt that he should decline, but he really had no option. The chairman thanked the secretary, Mr. Heffer, for his splendid work during the past year. Mt. A. Saba concurred and said that Mr. Heffer had done a great job. Mr. R. Dix spoke in a similar strain. Mr. A. M. Ryan was accorded a vote of thanks for auditing the books, the treasurer, Mr. D. Robins, remarking that he was grateful to Mr. Ryan for many useful "tips” in connection with his work as treasurer. Following a discussion on inter-club competitions, it was decided that Taihape compete in the southern group for the Rangitikei Shield only, and in Ihe northern section for the Junior Banner and Taumarunui Shield.

I was stated that the Wanganui Bowling Centre was pleased that Talhape was competing in the southern section of the Rangitikei Shield competition. Mr. Morris explained that without Taihape in the southern area in Rangitikei Shield matches. Marton would have only Hunterville to compete against. He thought it was a very good idea for Taihape to be in the southern group. “Taihape had decided to go south,” explained Mr. Morns. A voice: It is much better than “going west.” ( Laughter). It was decided that the president and secretary be delegates to the northern and southern groups. During a discussion on percentage fours, Mr. J. Bridson moved and Mr. Dix seconded, that this competition be continued this season. Mr J. Polkinhorne moved an amendment that the percentage fours competition be abandoned. Mr. A. Saba seconded the amendment. Messrs D. Morris and T. Robinson spoke against percentage fours. Mr. G. H. Boles advocated a “Club Day” and stressed the social side of such an event. Mr. Hylton suggested that percentage fours should be played first and the friendly games afterwards, but It was pointed out to him that there would probably be no time for botn. After further discussion the amendment that percentage fours be abandoned was carried. Mr. W. Annear suggested the building of a new shed for the club’s tools and equipment and for holding topdressing. Mr. L. Howard expressed the opinion that the main gate giving access to the green was an “eye sore” and something should be done about it. Mr. A. J. Buck-ley suggested a ladder competition but Mr. Morris said that he was against it as such a competition would interfere too muon much with club games, but Mr. Buckley disagreed on this point. In connection with the club fours. It was resolved that better arrangements be made this season. It was decided to take out an insurance policy similar to the one which expired last yeai In vacating the chair, the retiring president, Mr. D. Morris, extended a warm welcome to Mr. W. T. May, the I new president, and wished him every 1 success during his term of office and felt, confident that members would extend to Mr. May the same loyalty and support that they had given tne speaker. Mr. May feelingly responded and stressed the fact that he would do his I best for the club.
