Chainey (Wanganui) the Centre referee. . An official of the Marton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club last night expressed the club’s thanks to all who had assisted in the conduct of th# race. He particularly mentioned the Marton Legion of Frontiersmen who patrolled the corners and intersections in the borough, those residents who permitted the club to use of telephones during the course of the race, and the ladies’ committee .who dispensed such a tasty afternoon tea. the scrum gave the back line more penetration, and with Athletic seeing more of the ball from the scrums, Old Boys had to exert' every ounce of strength to stop the opposition from scoring. Once Oldfield, Hart and Price spreadeagled the defence With a torrid dribbling rush and it was only J. Frederick’s brilliant backing up that stopped Athletic from scoring near the posts. Frederick just managed to find touch with a timely kick. Later Towler uncoiled one of his sudden bursts down the side-line, after all the Athletic backs had handled. The game continued to swing in Athletic’s favour .until the final whistle, and the score remained o—o.
