ATHLETIC JUNIORS WENT CLOSE TO BEATING OLD BUYS. Marton Old Boys juniors narrowly retained their unbeaten record of the season on Saturday, when they nosed home hy three points to nil against Athletic. Goal-kicking could easily have given Athletic victory, as Gordon Pull, usually a reliable kicker, failed with five attempts, although none were “sitters.” The heavy ball also accounted for some of Pull’s shots falling short. The only points in the match came from a penalty by A. Stewart soon after the start of the second spell, from in front of the Athletic props. These three points werq sufficient to give Old Boys victory. The game was spoilt by a sodden ground and rain which fell for practically the entire game. Before the ball became too slippery, Athletic were on the attack as the result ot good scrummaging, and kept hammering away at the Old Boys’ line The Athletic backs were also more adept in handling a greasy ball. Once or twice Old Boys in this spell went close to scoring, but Pull, the Athletic first live-eighths, was always handy to repel the attack. In the second spell. Athletic did not dictate the run of play as they did in the first spell, and territorially Old Boys held a slight advantage. Forward play predominated and in this respect both packs toiled well. It was anybody’s game until the final whistle. Old Boys were penalised frequently throughout the match, and on a fine day, with a dry ball, Pull would probably have presented his side with at least nine points.
