SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs. Olive Millen, who spent the ■week-end in Wanganui, returned to Wellington yesterday. Mrs. A. H. Mac Lean was re-elected president of the Wanganui branch of the National Council of Women at the annual meeting on~ Monday night. Mr. and Mrs. L. Franks, of Bowers, Aston, Bristol, England, who are on a world tour and at present visiting New Zealand, were the guests of Mrs. A. J. Tasker, Makirikiri, for a few days before leaving for Napier. A visitor to Wanganui from America is Mrs. Elizabeth S. Williams, of New York. On Monday she gave a talk to the pupils of the Girls’ College, speaking of her work during the war. As it happened to be America’s Memorial Day (equivalent to our Anzac Day), the pupils sang “The Star Spangled Banner’’ in honour’ of the visitor. Mrs. Williams attended the National Council of Women’s annual meeting held in the evening. Mrs. Williams was in New Zealand during the war, when she was Director of Recreation for the Red Cross Society in the American Hospital at Auckland and later when she went to Guadalcanal. During her stay in Wanganui, Mrs. Williams was the guest of Miss M. E. Baker, principal of the Girls’ College. Donation to Rest Room. Included among the donations- re ceived through a recent “Paddys Market’ conducted for the Old Folks Rest Room in Wanganui was a sum of £l2 12s from the Wanganui Townswomen’s Guild. Nga Tawa Old Girls’ Assn. The Wanganui branch of the Nga Tawa Old Girls’ Association held its annual meeting on Friday in the Victoria League rooms. The election of officers resulted: —President, Mrs. T. Alexander; committee, Mrs. E. W. Sampson, Miss K. Hatrick, Mrs. C. Linwood, Miss L. Strachan, Miss B. Cole, Mrs. R. Hatrick, Mrs. H. B. Knight; honorary secretary, Miss J. Millward.
