ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL
Plea That It Should Be Brightened LONDON, May 31 (Rec. 8 p.m.)— “The Cathedral is like a piece of Victorian furniture and is without relevance to modern life. If it is to live today, St. Paul s—like the rest of the church —must share in the peacetime life of the people as it shared in their afflictions during the war years,” said Canon John Collins, resident canon of St. -Paul’s, preaching in the Cathedral. Canon Collins said that there was too much adherence to tradition in the Cathedral. “As soon as we make any departure from tradition we get screaming letters from regular worshippers deploring it,” he said “The risk has to be taken. Let us take part in the life of the people at the risk of losing some from St. Paul’s. We can best give life to the Cathedral by calling upon artists, musicians, scholars, architects, and artificers to enrich and beautify it." The Dean of St. Paul’s, Dr. W. R. Matthews, commenting upon Canon Collins’ remarks, said: “I agree that anything we can do to beautify the Cathedral and bring it more into the life of the people is to be desired."— N.Z.P.A.
