Butter Coupons. It. was announced yesterday by the Rationing Controller that butter coupons 33, 34, and 35 will each be available for purchase of half a pound of butter during the four-weekly period June 6 to July 3.

Telegrams to China Telegrams may now be accepted for all points in China, but traffic is subject to indefinite delay. Advice to this effect was received yesterday by the acting Chief Postmaster, Wanganui, Mr H. A. N. Catanach.

Horseman Injured When the horse he was riding on his property slipped on wet grass late yesterday afternoon and fell on him, Mr D. Sutherland, Warrengate Road, FordelL received a fracture of his left leg. He was brought to Wanganui by ambulance and admitted to the General Hospital.

Barometer Steady For the past 24 hours barometric pressure at Wanganui has remained steady at 30.00 in., but the weather has been cloudy with occasional rain. There were some heavy showers on Monday night and yesterday morning light misty rain was experienced till midday. The afternoon was cloudy, but more settled. Vital statistics for Wanganui for last month reveal increases in births, deaths and marriages compared with the month of May last year. Births totalled 75 as against 64 for the same month last year. Twenty-nine persons died in Wanganui last month compared with 25 in May, 1948. Marriages numbered 25 as against 20. Figures for the live months are; Births 344, deaths 136. marriages 134. Shannon’s property, which adjoins Lismore Station, as the venue for this year’s North Island and New Zealand dog trials championships. The terrain chosen will enable the public to gain a complete view of both the hunt away and leading events. Generally, at dog trials championships the spectators can only watch one event at a time. The trials which are being conducted by > the Parapara-Makirikiri Sheep Dog Trials Club, will be held from June 13 to June 22.

Primary School Rugby. As the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Clubs winter meeting will be held on Saturday, all Saturday morning Primary school Rugby matches have been cancelled. This was decided at last night’s meeting oi the management committee of the Wanganui Rugby Union. After representations made by the Wanganu Primary School’s Rugby Union, the committee approved of a match be tween Gonville A and Castlewhero as the curtain raiser to the Wanganui Taranaki representative match, at Spriggen’s Park, on King’s Day. Evidence Wanted.

“When people apply for licences they should produce evidence in support of the application, stressing the necessity for and the desirability of the licence being granted,” commented the No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr. J. P. O. Skoglund) at a sitting in Taihape yesterday. Several applications for new licences were heard, the Rehabilitation Department being represented by Mr. J. D. Measles Affect Attendances Wanganui headmasters reported yesterday that measles and chickenpox are affecting attendances at city and suburban schools, but they stated that the incidence is no more than is normal about this time of the year. This was confirmed by the Health Department’s school medical officer (Dr. K. Brown), who said that there was no need for alarm. Because of the weather the usual crop of sickness cases had developed, she added. A few pupils of the Wanganui Collegiate School who had been measles contacts while on holiday, had not yet returned. the acting-headmaster, the Rev. H. W. Austin, said yesterday.

Wanganui Referees. The Wanganui Referees Association has approved the following referees available for inter-provincial ana international matches in order ol merit: Messrs. W. B. Broaclhead, N. Neilson, C. H. Transom, J. Dickson and L. Le Compte. This was states at last night’s meeting of the management committee of the Wanganui Rugby Union. This information wil be forwarded to the New Zealand Rugby Union for inclusion in a new Rugby handbook, which is at present being compiled. The handbook wiL also contain the Ranfurly Shield rules and will deline the inter-umon boundaries.

Collier Due Today After being delayed off Greymouth by rough weather, the Anchor Company’s coastal motor-ship Puriri loaded at the West Coast port on Monday and was to have left there at 11 a.m. yesterday for Castle el iff. Given favourable weather for the passage up the coast, there is a possibility Liat the vessel will berth early this a.ternoon. She is bringing 1000 tons of coal and will be the first collier to discharge at Castlecliff for nearly three months. The vessel was originally expected at the week-end, but rough seas at Greymouth prevented her from entering port to load lor Wanganui.
