PRIME MINISTER SYMPATHISES WITH BISHOP BENNETT
AUCKLAND, Last Night (P.A.)— Sympathy with the Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, on the question of crime among the Maori people was expressed this afternoon by the Prime Minister. Mr. Fraser said he had discussed the matter with the Hon. T. E. Tirikatene, and added that he would be glad to meet the proposed deputation. “I would be glad to offer the full co-operation of the Maori Affairs Department, particularly the Maori Welfare Commission.” Mr. Fraser said that Mr. Tirikatene was also distressed by what seemed to be an exceptional excess of law breaking. Some of it was very serious on the part of younger Maoris. Commenting on the social upheaval inevitably caused by the war, Mr. Fraser added “while deeply regretting the amount of crime by individual Maoris we must not be unduly depressed or be parties to exaggerating the difficulty.” He believed the temporary difficulties would be overcome.
