SAVAGE CLUB HAS AS ITS GUESTS MEMBERS OF KINDRED SUICIETIES

In recognition of the fact tha. bodies concerned with the. cultural life of Wanganui, with particuiai reference to the stage and music, nave a very close relationship although operating in different spneres, the vvanganui savage Club arranged a “korero" on Saturday night in tribute to live city organisations whose aims are similar, in the main directed to self-expression the Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society, Repertory Society, British Music Society, K.S.A. Little Theatre and tut Male Voice Choir. Savages and, in some cases, visitors, combined to present a programme which revealed the type ot items encouraged by the respective bodies ana the Savage Club itself. In the chair for tile night was Savage J. Shanks, » member of the High Council and the club’s programme committee, who is a member of the Male Choir, British Music Society and the Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society. He was installed in office with customary Savage Club facetiousness by the “Kangatira,” Savage A. F. Newrick. Each of the bodies to which the "korero” was dedicated was represented, by delegated visitors, who were introduced to the audience. The representatives were: Musical and Dramatic Society, Messrs. G. Tarram (vice-president and file member), G. Nelson (.assistant secretary), and savage E. Lind (secretary); Repertory Society, Mr. L. M. H. Cave (committee member); Male Choir, Messrs. F. Emmett (president) aiid tLeagt W. Hanton (deputising for his son, Savage S. Hanlon); British Music Society, Savage Dr. Kenrick Christie (vice-president) and Mr. Stan Kitson an active executive member); R.S.A. Little Theatre, Savage Roland Young (convener) and Mr. Jim Pawson.

A feature of the programme was the singing of a Savage Club male chorus, which is to be developed into a glee parly by Savage E. O. Schnack in its first appearance the party sang well known tunes with words adapteu to suit the occasion. Members of the party were Savages C. Cornish, M. Ferris, J. Kenward, C. Haar, J. Healey, O. Larsen, E. O’Keefe, T. Partridge, A. Peachey, L. Gillman and H. Wilson.

Violin solos were contributed by Mr Roy Jack, a member of the British. Music Society. Savage E. Brandon (Male Choir) and Savage W. Thompson (British Music Society and Musical and Dramatic Society) both contributed vocal solos. Humorous duets in Cockney style were sung by two new arrivals in Wanganui trom England, Messrs. Rose and Whitehead. A sketch, “There is So Much Good, was produced by Savage R. Piper (Repertory Society and Music ana Dramatic Society), with himself and Savages E. Lind, Cadwallader and Dr. J. Duthie in the cast. The “Definitior Kids” presented a quiz session: Savages H. Low, C. Robertson, L. Gillman, C. Haworth and J. Goss.

Members of the Musical and Dramatic Society presented a character item, costumed and staged in gypsy setting. In the cast were Savages A. Peachey, C. Cornish, J. Mack and J. Goss and Messrs. Patterson and Davidson. In this were featured lightning sketches by Savage Cornish, a song by Savage Mack about the city tranways, and a song by Savage Peachey, with male chorus “Sea Girt Land o£ My Home.” Savage H. Wilson entertained with a series of deceptive trick arrangements, ranging from an empty Dox that turned out to have more in it than the eye could see, including pound and live pound notes, to an amusing string and rod demonstration.

As usual the Savage Club orchestra played appropriate numbers. The orchestra was under the baton of its deputy conductor, Savage F. Watson, the musical director, Savage W. Bowra being absent.because or illness. /From the brush of a former Savage, Mr. Bob Howell, a cartoon arnvea during the week to mark the elevation to “Rangatira" ot Savage A. Newrick. This was presented by the immediate past “Rangatira” (Savage A. .1. W. Hodder) and aroused a great deal of interest. It was announced that next “korero” would be Scottish night ana members were asked to appear in traditional Scottish garb. It was also reported that Savage Roland Young had undertaken to produce a musical comedy for ladies’ night, the music for winch is being written by Savage E. Schnack. The club is to “raid” the Wellington Orphans Club on June 18, and an appeal was made lor as many members as possible to make the trip. A party of eight Wanganui Savages, led by the Ariki (Dr. G. J. Adams) is going to Hawke's Bay and Gisborne, and will arrive in time to assist in the “raid” on Wellington.
