Sir Stafford Cripps Said To Be Confident Of The Future Of Sterling

CANBERRA, May 3 (Recd. 8 pm) It is learned authoritatively that during the Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ talks in London, the Prime Minister of Australia (Mr. Chifley) wa> told by Sir Stafford Cripps (British Chancellor of the Exchequer) that b. had no fears for the immediate future of sterling. Mr Chifley warned Sir Stafford that in many types of commodity, including English cars, the Australian market was nearing saturation. He emphasised Australian interest in capital equipment. A Government spokesman said there would be no “bombshell” as the result of Mr. Chifley’s trip. The four main subjects were Inaia, meal, sterling and immigration.
