HUIA AND PIRATES WIN SATURDAY'S RUGBY

TAIHAPE, Last Night (OC).—The 1949 Taihape Rugby competitions opened on Saturday, the main attraction being the match between Utiku Old Boys and Huia, which resulted in a win for Huia by 15 points to 14, after a game of fluctuating fortunes. Play was of a high standard. For the winners tries were scored by A. Mortland and Pearce; D. McCarthy kicked three penalty goals. For Utiku Old Boys, Henery kicked three penalty goals and converted a try scored ■by W. Maher. 'Mr. F. M. Healey was referee. On the No. 2 ground Pirates defeated Man.gaweka by 12 points to 9 after a somewhat ragged game in which Pirates had the better of the game. For Pirates, Selby kicked four penalty goals. For Mangaweka Due kicked two penalty goals and Simmons scored a try. Mr. Ball was referee. Junior results were: Navy 11, beat Pirates 0; Utiku Old Boys 11. beat Huia 0. Third grade: Pirates 20, beat Huia 3; Utiku Old Boys 6, beat High School 5.
