Waverley Almost Beat Kaierau
With three minutes to full time. Waverley looked to have the game won against Kaierau on Spriggens Park. At one stage they were in front 9-6. But in the space of those minutes Waverley were penalised, and from long range I. Whale goaled with a fine effort to make the final score 9-all. It was a fitting finish to an evenly contested game. Waverley, who were without some four of their regular players, made a good impression in their first park appearance this season. The teams were: Kaierau: W. Dawson. T. Cartwright, C. Lynch, B. Bason. I. Whale, G. Lnonl, J. James. J. McKnight, G. Gerrie, E. Bellis, R. Ward, W. Williams, Managh, R. Crombie, J. McConachy. Waverley: C. Dalli.son, H. Halley, S. Sturmey, Hughes, G. Sturmey, B. Foreman, R. Best. E. Marks, T. Long, H. Newland, B. Hone, L. Hone, R. Dallison. S. Stewart, G. Meads. Referee: Mr. J. Ross.
Kaierau enjoyed a territorial advantage following the opening minutes of play and C. Dallison was called on repeatedly at full-back to line under pressure. Hone were prominent, forced Kaierau to concede ground and a deft move by the Waverley backs looked promising, but Halley lacked the necessary pace to score. A determined attack by Kaierau backs saw Bason make a break goalward. Halley dived to .stumble Bason, but not before the last-nimed got the hall to the fast moving Lynch at centre. He kicked the ball over the head of Dallison, the Waverley full-back, and followed up fast to regain possession and score. The kick missed. - Kaierau 3, Waverley 0. Just on halftime Best scored for Waverley. and the first spell ended Kaierau 3, Waverley 3. Play had not long been in progress in the second half when C.
