Huimai & Ohakea Win Seven-A-Side Hockey

Marten Centennial Park presented a colourful sight on Saturday when the Rangitikei Women’s Hockey Association opened its new season with senior A and B seven-a-side tournaments. The weather was ideal for the occasion and the two new hockey fields, used for the first time, played well and should improve with further games.

Both the defending teams 'of the Linkfield Rose Bowl (Tuis) and the Aitken Cup (Rata) failed to win their sections and new holders were found for the trophies. Huimai went through a strenuous afternoon with an unbeaten record to win the Linkfield Rose Bowl, while Ohakea Air Force, playing their first game in Rangitikei, made an auspicious debut by carrying off the Aitken Cup as winners of the senior B tournament.

The following were the section points:— Senior A (Section 1): Te Kauwau A 5, United A 5, Tuis A 2, Athletic B 0. In the play off of the section final Te Kauwau beat United by a hit behind after extra play. Section 2: Huimai A 6, Hunterville A 4, Te Kauwau B 2, Tuis B 0. Section winners, Huimai A. Section 3: Athletic A 5, Swifts A 5, Huimai B 2, United B 0. In the section final play-off Athletic beat •Swifts. Semi-final: Huimai A 2, beat Athletic 0. Final: Huimai A 1 beat Te Kauwau A 0. There was very little between the two teams. Mrs. Judd, who played an outstanding game, early in the first spell scored a goal for Huimai and after that the team was content to play a defensive role and keep their goal intact. L. Lumsden was the pick of the Te Kauwau players and in the first spell made one exciting run up the field only to see her shot go wide of the goal-mouth. Just before the bell the same player again broke away,. Mrs. Judd making an excellent save. The winning team was: B. Harre (captain), P. Peterson, P. Peck, P. Duddftig, M. Peterson, J. Rudd, P. McNae. SENIOR B RESULTS. Senior B (Section 1): Ohakea 8, Bulls 6, Hunterville B 4, Athletic C 2, Swifts C 0. Section winners, Ohakea. Section 2: Tuis C 6. Rata 4, Hunterville C 1, Swifts B 1. Section winners, Tuis C. Final: Ohakea 1, beat Tuis C 0. The teams were very evenly matched in the final. The youthful Tuis team played very well, one of the players being only 10 years of age Ohakea’s solitary goal came in the second spell, from the stick of H. Wanoa. The winning team was: T. Harrison (captain), A. Hodgson, H. Wanoa, G. Keegan, P. Paenga, N. Hudson, S. Tremaine. At the conclusion of the tournament Mr. W. G. Aitken, a life member, in the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr. C. C. Hupt, presented the Linkfield Rose Bowl to Miss B. Harre, captain of the winning team, while Mrs. I. Hammond presented the Aitken Cup to Miss Harrison, captain of Ohakea. Both teams were congratulated on their victories. The members of the winning teams were each presented with buttons. BASKETBALL SEASON OPENS IN MARTON. (By "Goalie”). An exciting one-point win by Marton Red over Athletic A was the highlight of the opening day’s basketball in Marton when competition matches began on Saturday. Some very good games were played and many new players showed promise of developing into useful acquisitions as the season advances. Results were: St. Andrew’s 16, beat Athletic B 6; M.D.H.S. 23, beat Turakina 17; Marton Red 11, beat Athletic A 10. In a friendly match between Rongotea and Marton Green the visitors were victorious by 16 to 7. A play-off for the final of the B grade tournament between Turakina and St. Andrew’s, unfinished last week, was won by Turakina by 3 to 1 The Marton-Red-Athletic match was very closely contested right from the starting whistle and teams scored goal for goal to emerge even with live each at half-time. Some excellent centre play was displayed by both teams, with B. Wasson (Athletic) and IM. Shannon and P. Fittler (Red) playing outstanding games. The Red ‘team has found a decidedly useful [player in P. Corkhill, who added I thrust and accuracy to the attack. The pick of the defenders were R. Gorrie (Red) and Y. Southby (Athletic), who both played tirelessly and saved many goals for their sides. The second spell saw both teams engaged in a fast interchange of passes with both centre combinations working tirelessly and maintaining an even scoring rate. An exciting game which could have been won by either side with equal justice, ended ‘with Red one goal ahead. Miss O. Duck refereed. OBITUARY. Mrs. Emily Illston.
