MINIMUM WAGE SCALES UP TO £5BO IN 18 YEARS WELLINGTON. Last Night (PA) The first New Zealand Bank Officers’ Award was issued by the Court of Arbitration today. The award grants bank officers minimum salary scales, dating from December. 1948, rising to £560 per annum alter 18 years’ service. The workers’ union in its claims asked that the court should make provision for the setting up of an appeal board. The court is not satisfied that it has any jurisdiction to grant such a claim.

In determining on rates of wages the court has fixed two schedules, one to operate from December, 1948, and the other from June 1. 1949. The latter schedule is designed to give effect to the court’s pronouncement of April 12.” Minimum salaries payable as from December 3, 1948- together with those to become effective from June 1 in parentheses- are as followMales: First year £155 (£160), second year £lBO (£185), third year £212 (£220), fourth year £242 (£250), fifth year £275 (£285). sixth year £3lO (£325), seventh year £340 (£360), eighth year £465 (£385). ninth year £390 (1410), 10th year £415 (£435), 11th year £440 (£460), 12th year £450 (£470). 13th year £470 (£490). 14 th year £490 (£510), 15th vbar £505 (£525), 16th year £530 (£550). 17th year £545 (£565), 18th year and thereafter £560 (£580).

Females: Rising from £l5O (£155) in the first year to £360 (£375) in the 12th year and thereafter. Ordinary hours of work are not to exceed 40, to be worked on five days, Monday to Friday. Overtime is to be paid for at time and a-half. Time worked in excess of 11 hours is to be paid for at double time. The wage clause of the award is retrospective to December 3- and all other clauses from April 28. The award will continue in force until October 28, 1950. The New Zealand Bank Officers’ Union, in its claims placed before the court- sought a salary scale rising to £620 per annum in the 18th year.
