LITTER OF PIGS WEIGH MORE THAN TON

CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday (PA). —A litter of 14 Berkshire-cross Large I White pigs aged six months, weighI ing 1 ton 3291 b., was killed at IslingI ton on Wednesday. Reporting this to I the annual meeting this evening of 'the Canterbury District Pig Council, i the supervisor, Mr H. W. Mclntosh, I said this was the first time a ton lit- | ter had been recorded in the South I Island The litter was raised by Mr. S. W. Wall, of Koiterangi (West | Coast). All the pigs were graded as l prime number 1 baconers “Not a head was i ejected or a blemish on any of them,” said Mr. Mclntosh. Members of the council paid tribute to the raiser of the litter and it was decided to recognise the feat by a congratulatory letter. A heavier litter of one ton 10531b5., which was reported recently from Auckland, was made up of 15 pigs, all of which, except two, were within chopper weights, said Mr Mclntosh. This litter had been pushed along I vHthout considering the final quality of the litter Mr. Walls’ litter had beer, raised on ordinary foods. “This is important because it proves that it is within the power of any ordinary farmer to produce a ton litter without special foods,” said Mr. Mclntosh Fourteen pigs will be kept intact in refrigeration and exhibited in the Canterbury bacon competition to be held in Christchurch in August.
