Alleged Libel In Articles On Communist Activities
MELBOURNE, April 29 (Recd. 10 pm).—Two Supreme Court writs involving seven plaintiffs;' have been taken out against the Melbourne “Herald” and “Weekly Times” Limited and Cecil Harbert Sharpley. The plaintiffs claim unspecified damages for alleged libel in articles on Communist activities written by Sharpley and published in the “Herald.” In one writ, Stanley James Williams, of South Yarra, is sole plaintiff. Plaintiffs in the other suit are John David Blake, of Hawthorn; Francis Thomas Johnson, of Elsternwlck; Edward Fowler Hill, of Flemington; Ralph Seward Gibson, of Armadale; George Richard Oke, of Hawthorn; and Victor Bird of Toorak. Trials of actions before juries of six are sought by the plaintiffs.
