GERMANS WITH RADIOACTIVE URANIUM HAVE SEEN ARRESTED
(N.Z. P. A. —Copyright.) LONDON, April 29 (Reed. 6pm).— Nine Germans were arrested in Darmtadt on charges of possesing 4|lbs r.f radio active uranium—material used in atomic bombs. The Associated Press Frankfurt correspondent quotes American Army gents as saying the Germans were ..rrested when they offered to sell the ..ranium for £750,000. The Germans ere carrying ore wrapped in a newsaper in a brief case without any protection from its rays. Agents said it i?d been proved to be radio active. A hemist had told them it could prove nmful to anybody exposed to ’t, even for 20 minutes. The newspaper “Frankfurter Neue ’-resse” said the Germans offered to «•?!! the ore to Army agents in the belief that it was to be smuggled to the Russian zone of Germany. Army a ents worked on the case for about x weeks before making the arrests. All nine Germans were charged v th violating an American Military Government ordinance banning the possession and sale of war material.
