FORMATION OF SEPARATE PAROCHIAL DISTRICT FOR ALL SAINTS’CHURCH

The possibility of All Saints’ Anglican Church, Wanganui East, supporting itself as a separate pardchial district, and the steps already taken in this direction, were referred to by the priest-in-charge, the Rev. F. A. Koay, in his report to the annual meeting of parishioners.

At the beginning of August, last, he stated, the Church Council was given permission by the central vestry of the parish of Wanganui, following earlier representations by the council, to begin a two-year probationary period in order to ascertain the possibility of Wanganui East supporting itself as a separate parochial district.

“It was felt that the time had come when this was sufficiently advanced to launch out into maturity, as it were, as far as church matters were concerned,” Mr. Keay added. “This project had the wholehearted support of by far the greatest majority of Anglicans here, and the council felt that they had a mandate from the parishioners to exert every effort to bring the project to a successful conclusion.” A budget was drawn up, and it was estimated that at least £7OO would bo required to finance the project. In order to meet that amount it was decided to augment the church income by appealing for additional subscribers to the envelope system. The council decided that a house-to-house visitation of all Anglican homes be undertaken and volunteers agreed to carry cut this work. “The response Io the appeal was most satisfying, the numbers of subscribers having risen over the period from August last from some 70 to in the vicinity of 250 at present,” Mr. Keay stated. “These figures show very clearly the marked success of the efforts of these gentlemen, end not only is their effort a great success in the sphere of finance, but also it is a marked success in bringing the church into the homes of the people. “And so. the project of a separate parochial district was off to a tremendously fine start, with keenness and enthusiasm being very evident on all sides.”
