A large number of ex-servicemen journeyed from Bulls to attend the Anzac Day service which was held at Flock House Farm of Instruction. The usual dawn light did not break through a still, sombre sky until well after ail had assembled. A most impressive service was conducted by the Rev. C. C. Hoskin, of Bulls. In the course of his address he emphasise* the great need for all to remember what had been done for them at Gallipoli, and the other great battles of both wars.\He spoke of the duty that, the world owed to those, the living and the dead, who had served in the cause of the Empire. The familiar lines of Laurence Binyon’s fourth verse to the Fallen, was Vecited by an ex-serviceman. “They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the year condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.” The Last Post was sounded by Trainee K. Lee, assisted by Trainee W. Hall on the drum, while the New Zealand flag was reverently hoisted by Trainee F. Maxwell. Trainee D. Travers officiated at the piano.

COUNCILLOR’S NOTICE OF MOTION LOST. A notice of motion moved by Cr. E. C. Fogelberg that a motion passed at the February meeting dealing with the abolition of a minimum gas fee and the institution of a meter rental, be rescinded, was lost when it came before a meeting of the Marton Borough Council on Wednesday night. The notied of motion was a sequel to a brisk debate last council meeting when Cr. Fogelberg contended that the town clerk had placed a wrong interpretation on a resolution he originally moved at the February meeting.

Before discussing the notice of motion on Wednesday night the Mayor, Mr. T. E. Barton, read portion of standing orders io councillors—a move which has not been adopted at a council meeting for many years. The mayor said the subject was a very contentious matter and adherence to standing orders would ensure an orderly debate free of irrelevancies. The mover was given the right to speak to the motion and reply after each councillor had spoken once. The motion was supported by Crs. Fogelberg, A. S. Blackledge, A. Gracie and K. H. Fowler. Those who voted against it were the mayor and Crs. W. J. Mogridge, J. R- Howard, J. Caithness, and A. Todd. The motion arose from a council decision to remit the minimum gas fee of 2s 6d from March 31. 1949, and replace it with a meter rental of 5s a month from April 1, 1949, the rental to be remitted provided a consumer used more than 5s werth of gas in a month. The new meter rentals were charged on March gas accounts, and Cr. Fogclberg said that he considered a wrong interpretation had been placed on the resolution, and that the meter rental should first apply where necessary on April accounts rendered in May.
