National Chrysanthemum Show At Wanganui

Blooms of a slamlard which the judges declared they had not seen for many years and which were a pleasure Io adjudicate were the feature of the National Chrysanthemum Show, which was officially opened in the Drill Hall yesterday afternoon by the Minister of Agriculture (Air. Cullen). The show is being held in conjunction with the Wanganui Horticultural Society’s autumn show and will be continued today. In extending a welcome to the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Cullen)- the president of the Wanganui Horticultural Society, Mr G. A Ammundsen, said the holding of the national chrysanthemum show in Wanganui was an event of outstanding importance. The holding of the show in Wanganui would help to olimulate the work of the Wanganui society, whose efforts were appreciated by city councillors, said the Hon. W. J. RogersM.L.C., Mayor of Wanganui. Mr J. B. Cotterill, M.P.- said that this was Mr Culien’s first visit to Wanganui as Minister of Agriculture, but he had visited the district on a number of occasions as a member of the Rehabilitation Board. The display attracted an admiring crowd who were deeply impressed with the variety of colourings. Standi after stand of stately blooms of white, bronze, yellow, full green, shell pink and petunia shades showed their curled petals to the admiring eyes of horticultural enthusiasts. A display of delicate baby chrysanthemums added to the splendour of the show. The brilliant blending of colours in the excellent decorative section provided a colourful spectacle. The arrangement of the Howers in the- baskets, bowls, vases and troughs showed full well the originality of the ex- : hibitors. The trade displays ol shrubs, ferns, flowers, pot plants and fruit, together, with the entrance garden formed by shrubs and bamboos added to the colourful effect. The judges for the Wanganui competitions were:—Mr A. Gibson (Marton). Japanese chrysanthemums; Mr G. H. Elliffe (Dunedin), chrysanthemums other than Japanese; Mr S. Cole- cut flowers; Mrs Shepherd, decorative.
