BASKETBALL SEASON OPENS TOMORROW; DRAW ANNOUNCED

The 1949 basketball season in Wanganui will open tomorrow when competition games will be commenced. There is an increase in the numbers of teams affiliated so far and 51 teams will participate in play. Five teams are competing in senior grade games, Technical Old Girls, Past Students, Nga Toa, St. Mary’s, and X.T.C. The last mentioned team is a newcomer to senior grade play buut its players to senior grade play but its players! should have no difficulty in holding! them were members of the victorious Past Students team which performed so meritiously last season. The personnel of the other four senior grade teams is little changed and some spirited contests are anticipated. Competition for positions in the senior representative team will be very keen, especially with two. good trips in store for the team. The Rosenbrook Cup tournament, played annually between Manawatu, Wanganui, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington, will be held this year in Hastings on the last Saturday in July. The annual New Zealand tournament will this year be held in Dunedin during the last week in August. Two Waverley teams have again affiliated with the association and it is hoped that the local teams will be able to play some of their games on the Waverley courts. Teams have been holding regular practices and ’ndications point to a Keen and enthusiastic season.
