COMPENSATION FOR COLLIE DOGS

UMARU, Last Night (PA).— After discussions with the Minister of Railways, Mr. Semple, in Wellington last week and in Timaru concerning the compensation to be paid by the Railways Department for the death of two valuable Border CJoUie sheepdogs, the owner, Mr. R. Fortune* Timarut, said that a satisfactory settlement had been agreed upon.

Air. Fortune, who valued the dogs at £lOOO, was originally offered £lO for each of them by the Railways Department, which he refused. The two dogs, part of a team of six Collies which Mr Fortune was taking to the Sydney Royal Show for displays, were found dead from suffocation when the wagon in which they were consigned from Wellington was unloaded at Auckland on April 6.
