DUCHESS OF WINDSOR BEHAVED WITH DIGNITY BUT NOT “RECEIVED”
LONDON. April 27 (Recd. 7.30 pm). —The “Evening Standard,” remarking that the Duchess of Windsor has returned to France without being received in Royal circles, says this will cause regret.
“Through the twelve years of her marriage to the Duke, this American lady has behaved with dignity,” says the “Standard.” “True, she had been married before, but she was an innocent party in the divorce proceedings that ended her marriage to Mr. Ernest Simpson. In Royal circles distinction is drawn between the innocent and the guilty in divorce. The innocent are not debarred from the Royal enclosure at Ascot: the guilty are. Nevertheless, several persons are recognised by the Royal Family who are guilty parties.. Last week Sir Laurence and Lady Olivier were in a small private party with Princess, Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, so it is hardly consistent that the Duchess of Windsor should be excluded from courtesies extended to those who have been divorced.
