Three Thousand Communists Cross The Yangtse
SHANGHAI, April 22 (Recd. 7.20 pm).—Three thousand Communists crossed the Yangtse in the vicinity of East Chinkiang, 40 miles east of Nanking, this morning. The Communists are expected to prepare the soutii bank for further small night crossings by Red troops. This is expected to be the pattern of the tactics employed in the next few days by the Communists to secure a firm foothold on the south bank before attempting to bring over valuable heavy equipment, which includes countless American and Japanese heavy guns.
It is reported from Chinkiang that Nationalist Aiffiy headquarters are busily evacuming this Nationalist stronghold on the south bank. The Nationalist Army is moving south-east down the Nanking-Shanghai railway Ito new headquarters at Soocliow, (about 60 miles from Shanghai. The last two remaining Nationalist northbank bridgeheads opposite Chinkiang, at Luwei and Kwachow, have received orders to prepare to evacuate. It is reported from Hongkong that a state of emergency has been declared at Canton.—Reuter.
